			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Anda kenal Mang Oyo?  Saya pernah kenal dulu bertahun yang lalu ketika beliau masih aktif jaga warung. Beliau adalah pedagang bubur ayam yang cukup terkenal di Bandung. Dulu warungnya ada di depan SMP PGII, sekarang entah apa masih ada di sana atau tidak. Yang jelas warungnya sekarang ini cukup mentereng di Jalan Sulanjana tidak jauh dari rektorat ITB.</p>
<p>Saya tidak tahu persis apa yang membuat Mang Oyo menampilkan spanduk seperti ini di depan warungnya:</p>

<p>Coba perhatikan tulisan merah di foto di atas: &#8220;<strong><em>Telah terdaftar di hak cipta</em></strong>&#8221;</p>
<p>Terdaftar di hak cipta? <em>Gimme a break!</em> Nama warung <strong>Bubur Ayam Mang H. Oyo Tea</strong> telah terdaftar di hak cipta? Entah bagaimana pendapat anda, tapi menurut saya ini agak kelewatan. Bubur ayam tepi jalan namanya sudah didaftarkan ke hak cipta? Yang tercetus dalam benak saya adalah betapa ketatnya persaingan usaha sampai-sampai warung pinggir jalan (yang nota bene tergolong sektor non-formal) terpaksa harus memformalkan diri dalam bentuk perlindungan hak cipta.</p>
<p>Tulisan merah di bawahnya lebih seru lagi: &#8220;<em><strong>MANG H. OYONYA MASIH HIDUP</strong></em>&#8221; Berarti Mang Oyo pernah dituduh sudah meninggal, kan? Apakah persaingan usaha sudah sebegitu tidak sehatnya sehingga Mang Oyo perlu memberikan pernyataan bahwa beliau masih hidup?</p>
<p>Saya tidak pernah bertemu Mang Oyo lagi dalam beberapa persinggahan saya yang terakhir ke warung beliau. Tetapi dari pernyataan di depan warung itu jelas sekali bahwa:</p>
<ul>
<li>Ada usaha untuk mencontek nama beken Mang Oyo (sehingga beliau mencatatkannya sebagai hak cipta)</li>
<li>Ada usaha untuk mengesankan bahwa beliau sudah meninggal, entah itu berhubungan dengan yang di atas atau berdiri sendiri</li>
</ul>

<p>Kembali ke laptop!</p>
<p>Anda pernah makan Surabi Imut? Kalau belum silakan nikmati foto-foto yang ada di sini [to be uploaded]. Dulu, waktu saya masih sering lewat di Jalan Setiabudi, Surabi Imut masih menempati tempat yang cukup mentereng di sebelah kiri jalan (kalau berjalan naik ke arah Lembang). Sekarang Surabi Imut menempati warung yang tidak representatif, tidak sebanding dengan nama Surabi Imut yang sudah cukup terkenal. Warung yang agak butut ini ada di kanan jalan, di seberang lokasi lama.</p>
<p>Pertanyaannya tentu saja: kenapa harus pindah? Apalagi ke tempat yang lebih jelek dibandingkan sebelumnya.</p>

<p>Yang terdengar dari jauh sih sengketa dagang. Sang pemilik usaha ternyata bukan pemilik tempat, alias masih berstatus kontraktor. Melihat usaha makin maju, sang pemilik tempat ingin kebagian jatah yang setimpal. Akibatnya uang sewa dinaikkan. Karena adanya ketidaksepakatan, maka Surabi Imut hengkang ke seberang jalan.</p>
<p>Selesai sampai di situ? Ternyata tidak. Sang pemilik rumah meneruskan usaha surabi, entah beliau menjalankannya sendiri atau ada pengusaha surabi yang lain. Yang jelas di tempat lama masih berjualan surabi, sekalipun tanpa nama Surabi Imut, bahkan tidak ada namanya sama sekali. Di warung itu hanya tertulis papan nama &#8220;Surabi&#8221;.</p>

<p>Apa akibatnya? Semua pihak jadi korban tentu saja. Sang pemilik tempat lama jadi korban, karena konon kabarnya surabi yang di jual rasanya kurang <em>mak nyuss</em> dibandingkan dengan Surabi Imut. Lama-lama pasti akan ditinggalkan pelanggan. Belum lagi bila kita melihat masalah etika. Sang pemilik tempat lama tidak secara jantan menuliskan bahwa surabinya sudah bukan lagi Surabi Imut, sehingga (ini menurut perkiraan saya) banyak pelanggan lama Surabi Imut yang mampir ke sana karena menyangka itu masih Surabi Imut. Ini tentu saja terkategori tidak etis (hampir berderajat penipuan, walaupun secara legal tidak bisa disalahkan).</p>
<p>Bagi Surabi Imut sudah jelas ini merupakan hantaman. Pertama, lokasi adalah aset terbesar warung tepi jalan. Sekali lokasi sudah terdefinisi susah sekali untuk mengubahnya. Pindah lokasi, apalagi ke tempat yang lebih butut, adalah bencana bagi sebuah warung. Kedua, karena banyak pelanggan lama yang mampir ke tempat lama karena menyangka itu masih Surabi Imut, dan kemudian ternyata rasanya sudah lain, maka merek Surabi Imut menjadi terpukul.</p>
<p>Bukan hanya mereka (para pedagang yang bersengketa) yang merugi, pelanggan juga merugi. Kalau mereka pergi ke tempat baru, mereka akan makan surabi enak di tempat butut. Kalau mereka pergi ke tempat lama, akan lebih parah lagi karena surabinya saja sudah tidak enak, mau tempatnya bagus juga jadi butut.</p>
<p>***</p>
<p>Pertanyaan saya sederhana: kenapa persaingan harus berarti saling mematikan? Berapa banyak kita mendengar kisah serupa: ada warung yang harus pindah karena tuan tanah menaikkan harga sewa tak terkira banyaknya.</p>
<p>Padahal solusi menang-menang bisa dicapai dengan mudah dalam kasus-kasus seperti ini. Tuan pemilik tanah menyangka bahwa dia sebagai pemilik tanah berhak atas keuntungan usaha yang dilakukan di tanah miliknya. Kalau memang begitu pemikirannya, maka sang tuan tanah sudah berpikir sebagai <strong><em>pemilik</em></strong> usaha, kalau begitu tidak perlu lagi meminta uang sewa tetapi minta saham yang setimpal dari keuntungan usaha.</p>
<p>Bagi pemilik usaha, bila sang tuan tanah menaikkan nilai kontrak, maka seharusnya dia menawarkan kepemilikan kepada tuan tanah itu. Daripada pindah mencari tempat baru, dan kemungkinan nantinya menghadapi situasi yang sama dengan tuan tanah baru, kenapa tidak manawarkan sebagian saham kepada tuan tanah. Toch memang lokasi adalah modal penting dalam usaha warung makan.</p>
<p>Berapa besar sahamnya itu bisa dibicarakan, dan ini tentunya perlu keterbukaan dan saling percaya. Tapi bukankah itu adalah prinsip keberhasilan usaha? Konon sih katanya, maklum, saya sendiri bukannya pengusaha. Hanya seorang tukang jajan yang ingin menikmati makanan yang <em>mak nyuss </em>di tempat yang nyaman.</p>

<p>Coba tempelkan berbagai jenis kanker yang diakibatkan oleh rokok, seperti gambar di atas. Saya sekali melihatnya saja sudah seram. Silakan nikmati gambar-gambar itu, smoking will not be the same after that.</p>
<p>Jangan salah kira, industri rokok protes keras kepada pemerintah Singapura ketika peringatan visual ini mulai diberlakukan. Tapi ya itulah, hanya pemerintah Singapura yang punya kebijakan yang sangat hostile kepada industri rokok.</p>
<p>Bagaimana dengan pemerintah Indonesia? Yaaaaah, boro-boro hostile kepada industri rokok, malah kayaknya disayang-sayang, dengan dalih mempertahankan pekerjaan ribuan orang. Padahal ongkos biaya kesehatan yang ditanggung oleh generasi mendatang ketika kanker akibat rokok datang, mestinya jauh lebih besar dibandingkan dengan lapangan pekerjaan yang disediakan oleh industri rokok.</p>

<p>What I see is a concerted effort to make the driver &#8212; the company&#8217;s most valued asset &#8212; feels important. First of all by calling them <strong><em>captain</em></strong> instead of plain old <strong><em>driver</em></strong>. We may joke about it, but in the end of the day, it will make everyone who reads the warning to remember that the person sitting there is more than <em>just</em> a driver.</p>
<p>Secondly is of course the message of the sign. Not only they deserve a better designation, but they also deserve a safe place to work. They don&#8217;t deserve any abuse from the passenger, physical abuse or even verbal abuse. Anybody who tries to abuse them will find themselves get reported to the police.</p>
<p>I see this as a basic acknowledgement from an employer that the captains are important.</p>
<p>Compare that to bus drivers in Jakarta, well, enough said.</p>

<p>Secondly, the statistics: there are 8% people around Tampines who like to walk around naked in the bedroom. Well, do not ask about the uncertainty of the statistics, probably it goes up through the roof.</p>
<p>Thirdly, the message: Think of your neighbours. Translated: think of your poor neighbour, they might not enjoy the view, so please buy the curtain. Another translation: think of your not-so-patient neighbour, they might call the police.</p>
<p>Note: if you do not yet know, in Singapore it is an offense to walk around naked inside your own house while the window is not covered, that your neighbour can see through (from neighbouring apartment block).</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>In Indonesia, 28-Oct is commemorated as the Youth Pledge Day. On this day in 1928, there was a congress held in Jakarta attended by various youth organizations in Indonesia. This congress that was seen as an important milestone towards Indonesia&#8217;s independence from the Dutch colonial government, because this congress introduced a new platform in the struggle of independence: Indonesia. The term Indonesia was officially recognized as a uniting entity among different cultures within the archipelago.</p>
<p><span id="more-64"></span></p>
<p>At the end of the congress, the youth made the famous three pledges that despite their different cultures and origins, they pledge for one motherland: Indonesia, one nation: Indonesia, and pledge to uphold the uniting language: the Indonesian language.</p>
<p>I do not actually very interested in the romantic historical overview of the event. What is interesting is how we, as a nation, uphold our national language in the world withough borders as we live today. What <em><strong>upholding </strong></em>means for us?</p>
<p>Two options pop in my mind: (1) guard its purity against linguistic contamination, or (2) use it as we wish.</p>
<p>The first option will see us defend our language against silent attacks by frequent use of foreign language terminologies. Our reaction would be a frantic attempt to translate all absorbed idioms and terminologies to Indonesian. Here are some examples taken from an email sent to a mailing list (words in <em>italics </em>have been absorbed and transliterated into Indonesian):</p>

<p>I do not have a particular objection to this kind of interpretation of upholding the language. My only comment is that how pure do we want it to be? Indonesian is a dialect of Malay language, which has long been a <em>lingua franca</em> in the region. Naturally, if a language is spoken by many nations, then there will be absorption of foreign words into the vocabulary. Why couldn&#8217;t we just take those words, especially the ones that has been transliterated into Indonesian spelling, as Indonesian words? After all, some of the English words listed above are given Arabic words as the alternative, not &#8220;pure&#8221; Malay words which is the origin of Indonesian language. Why do we change English words in favor of Arabic, Sanskrit, or Javaneese words?</p>
<p>Another example is the word &#8220;formulir&#8221;, which means &#8220;form&#8221; as in &#8220;application form&#8221;. We took it from the Dutch word &#8220;formulier&#8221;, and we are OK with it even though there is a Malay word for it: &#8220;borang&#8221;. Is it because we do not want to use Malaysian word because it sounds strange, even though it is an original Malay word? Linguistic puritanism should have its own limit as to how pure it is that we want.</p>
<p>The second option for us is to simply use the language. That alone constitutes <strong><em>upholding </em></strong>the language, even if the language transforms in its use. As my Indonesian (language) lecturer said that if you want to know whether a word is Indonesian or not, simply refer to the Indonesian Dictionary published by the Language Center. If the word is used by people, it will be there, she said, and if it is there, it is Indonesian word.</p>
<p>Of course, as in the first option, there should be a limit as to how far the language is allowed to transform.</p>
<p>The Malay language is known to have different versions between the spoken and written form. However, the difference between <em>Melayu Pasar</em> (the spoken &#8220;street&#8221; Malay) and the written Malay is nothing compared to what happened today.<br />
The spoken language has become horribly non-standard. Just listen to the people talking on the streets, especially the teens, and you will be surprised how different they sound from the standard Indonesian language. The younger generation Indonesian seem to feel cool if they can speak strange language.</p>
<p>Even worse, the gap to the standard Indonesian is not only occurs in the spoken language, but started to happen in the written language. An email was sent to a mailing list where the sender put the word &#8220;Piss&#8221; in place of &#8220;Regards&#8221; before her signature. I honestly have to think about what it means before realizing that the word means &#8220;Peace&#8221; transliterated into cool Indonesian word &#8220;Piss&#8221;. Its a swing of association to the extreme. In &#8220;peace&#8221; you would associate sanctity and tranquility with it, while in &#8220;piss&#8221; you can only think about toilet.</p>
<p>The same phenomena is also observed by my friend Judhi in Singapore. He took a picture below that captured the same concern: strange language make us difficult to communicate. Why was &#8220;Nasi Lemark&#8221; written there when it should be &#8220;Nasi Lemak&#8221;? Is it because English speaking people will pronounce it more correctly than the original word? You read Judhi&#8217;s observation <a target="_blank" title="Confused Singaporean" href="http://www.flickr.com/photos/best/279699248/">here</a>. He is spot-on to point out that the food items on the list are not Muslim food. They are Malay food, but they have nothing to do with being Muslim food, or non-Muslim food for that matter. Being a Malay food does not make it a Muslim food.</p>

<p>The linguistic problem reflects communication problem. We cannot communicate effectively. This is a problem of course, but this is not the scariest part of it. Linguistic problem reflects jumbled thought, this is the monster problem. You cannot think effectively without adequate language capabilities. I do not realize this until I read Oliver Sacks&#8217; book <a title="Seeing Voices" target="_blank" href="http://www.amazon.com/Seeing-Voices-Oliver-Sacks/dp/0375704078/sr=1-1/qid=1163402927/ref=pd_bbs_sr_1/002-6976617-2768019?ie=UTF8&#038;s=books"><em>Seeing Voices</em></a> (I will write another article about this).</p>
<p>What lies ahead of us is the combination of the two options above. Use the language as we wish, and at the same time keep it from abandoning its identity as Indonesian language. Instead of speaking half-Indonesian-half-English, why not just speak English if you feel like it.
