Beware of road surprises

What can be the surprise on the road when you are driving?

Many things, of course. Being a driver is about being alert for any kind or surprises on the road. That goes without a warning in many countries.

For a place where they actually warn you about these surprises, well, that kind of make you really think what is really out there to surprise us.

Road surprises
You will find those signs on the highway connecting Abu Dhabi and Al-Ain in the United Arab Emirates.

Not too many suprises though. For about a year I drove back and forth between Abu Dhabi and Al-Ain, I never found any significant surprises. That is, if you don’t consider the recklessness of the local drivers as surprises.

Just to give you an idea: the speed limit on the highway is 120 km/hr. But everybody knows that the radar will only be triggered when you run 160 km/hr, and every radar has a warning when we approach it. So it is a common surprise when a car overtake you with a blazing speed of almost 200 km/hr, and then it suddenly slows down in front of you because it doesnt want to wake up the camera.

Now that is a surprise that you should always be vigilant when you drive in the Emirates.

Bro, I believe after year long driving this road, the blazing cars that overtake yours will be no longer surprising.

Instead of waiting for other surprises, why not you create one for other drivers.

Here’re some suggestions:

- drive backwards
- fly a huge Indonesian flag on your car
- make a family picnic at the roadside, complete with “nasi timbel” and “ikan asin”.
- etc. email me for more ideas :)

If Moses had gotten the Ten Commandments on a floppy disk, it would never have made it to today. (Dag Spicer, curator of the Computer History Museum in Silicon Valley, The NYTimes Circuit, 26-Mar-2009)
